Brown presents this nostalgic tribute to the life and times of the
English Electric Type 4, from their early days in 1958, through the
Indian Summer of the 1980’s, to the preservation era of the 90’s. Spanning
more than three decades, the programme features 50 different ‘Whistlers’
in action.
THE 50’s & 60’s: Superb quality archive film includes D200 in
1958 working "The Hook Continental", 40-hauled "Flying
Scotsman", "Royal Scot" and "Queen of Scots
Pullman", West Coast crack expresses and "Night Mail"
workings.
THE 70’s: Includes Scottish freight traffic, North Wales passenger
duties and footage of 40s at work on the Settle-Carlisle route.
THE 80’s: The last years of the Whistlers. Freight turns include
Manchester Binliners, UKF Vans, Peak Forest banker, Amlwch & Stanlow tanks,
Cartics and Speedlinks. Passenger turns include Trans-Pennine, Skegness
and West Coast drags.
FAREWELL RAILTOURS: Features a selection of classics including "Pennine
Summits", "Tees-Tyne Boggard", "Don &
Fiddler" and "Devon Quarryman".
THE RETURN OF D200 Includes film from Toton of the loco’s
restoration, and an interview with the man who sanctioned its return to traffic, plus
footage from around the country of the pioneer Whistler on tour.
DEPARTMENTAL SURVIVORS: All four 97s at work on the Crewe remodeling
project.
PRESERVATION: All 5 operational locos at work on various preserved
lines, plus the road move of D306 and the spectacular first-time fire up of
Aureol.
